Where do I find my paint code or VIN?

Paint code

  • Door jamb sticker: driver's door or frame, usually with tire pressure info. Look for "PAINT", "COLOR", "EXT", or a 2-4 character code.
  • German makes (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, Porsche): often also stamped on a plate in the trunk, spare tire well, or engine bay.
  • Japanese makes (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, etc.): usually on a sticker in the driver's door jamb or under the hood near the VIN plate.
  • American makes: typically on the door jamb sticker alongside the VIN, or inside the glovebox/trunk lid.

VIN

  • 17-character code on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield) or the door jamb sticker.
  • A VIN confirms the vehicle; it doesn't directly decode to a paint color. Look for the paint code on the same sticker.

Where do I find my paint code?

Match by paint code, not color name; one name can cover several codes. The code is on a label on the car, most often in the driver's door jamb, glove box or trunk, or under the hood.

No label? A dealer parts department can look up the code from your VIN. If the car has been repainted, check the code against the paint before you order.

Will the color match my vehicle?

Color match: we mix to your vehicle's factory paint code. Final appearance can vary with the age, wear and condition of the existing finish, so we recommend a test spray before full application.

Factory paint also varies: the same code can come from different plants and paint suppliers. Spray a test card first, then blend it into the surrounding paint. If the card doesn't match, email info@truerim.com before you paint.

Which size should I buy?

Every color is available in aerosol, pint, quart and gallon. The 12 oz (340 g) aerosol is ready to spray, with no gun, compressor or mixing, and suits touch-ups, spot repairs and small parts.

Pint, Quart and Gallon are for a spray gun. They ship un-reduced; mixed 2 parts paint to 1 part TrueRim urethane reducer, a Pint makes about 24 oz to spray, a Quart about 48 oz and a Gallon about 192 oz. Each color's page has a How much paint do I need? guide.

Do I need clear coat?

Yes. These are basecoats: they dry flat and need a clear coat for gloss and protection. Over the aerosol, use a SprayMax 2K aerosol clear: Glamour or High Speed for gloss, Satin or Matte for a lower sheen (Satin and Matte can't be polished).

With a spray gun, we recommend the Speed Clearcoat Kit: VC100 clear and VC102 hardener, mixed 4 parts VC100 to 1 part VC102.

Do I need primer?

Only on bare metal, body filler and sand-throughs; sound factory paint just needs sanding. Raw plastic gets one light coat of adhesion promoter first.

For small spots, use TrueRim 1K primer: Grey under most colors, Black under dark colors with no red in them. The kit builder on each color's page picks the shade. For larger bare-steel or filler areas, use SprayMax 2K epoxy primer.

What do "multi-stage", "pearl" and "tri-coat" mean?

Most colors are one basecoat under clear. A tri-coat has two color layers under the clear: a ground coat (the base color), then a mid-coat (a pearl or tinted layer). Every paint stage a color needs, including any undercoat, is included in every size at one price.

Both layers use the same application steps, and the number of mid-coat coats sets the shade, so spray a let-down card first. The color's page explains its layers.

Why ground shipping only?

Every order ships UPS Ground; air and express aren't available. Paint, aerosols, clear coats, reducers and solvents are regulated as hazardous materials, so the whole order ships by ground. UPS Ground usually takes 1โ€“5 business days from Seekonk, MA, plus processing.

Free UPS Ground shipping on orders of $300 or more after discounts. See our shipping policy.

Can I return paint?

Paint mixed to your color code can't be returned, refunded or exchanged, opened or not, so check your paint code before you order. Clear coats, hardeners, reducers, primers and solvents can't be returned either.

Wrong, damaged or defective item: email info@truerim.com within 24 hours of delivery with photos of the item, the label and the box. Other unopened, unused items: email us within 10 days of delivery for approval and a label. See our refund policy.

Can I order more later to match?

Yes. Order the same color again; it's mixed to the same paint code. Blend the new paint into what you already sprayed.
