Finish the job

Ready to refresh
your wheels?

Getting the right color is only part of the process: proper preparation and a quality clear coat give the best possible finish. Find your color, then the kit builder on its page adds a clear coat and the primer shade for that color. Doing a set of four? Painters typically use 2–3 cans of color.

Steps to success

Complete your
wheel project.

  1. 01. Prep

Spray a test card first. Then wash the wheel, degrease with two cloths (on with one, off with the other), sand (P180 on damage only, featheredge to P320, P600–P800 where the color goes) and mask the tire.

    Shop prep & primer
  2. 02. Prime

Prime only bare metal and sand-throughs; sound factory paint needs sanding, not primer. Let 1K primer harden 30–60 min, dry sand P600–P1000, then tack only.

    Shop primers
  3. 03. Color

Medium coats with a 5–10 min flash between them, until the color is even and no primer shows. Basecoat dries flat; that's correct. Painters typically use 2–3 cans of color for a set of four.

  4. 04. Clear

Clear coat is required. Clear 30–60 min after the last color coat, in the same session, with a SprayMax 2K aerosol clear.

    Shop clear coat

Why TrueRim?

Factory color.Ready to spray.

Matched to the factory color

TrueRim specializes in automotive paint for real-world restoration, repair and customization projects. Each color is matched to the factory color. Match by code, not by color name: one name can cover several codes.

Convenient aerosol format

Get the color you need in an easy-to-use 12 oz (340 g) aerosol: no gun, compressor or mixing. It suits touch-ups, spot repairs and small parts.

Basecoat under clear

Basecoat dries flat and has no gloss or protection of its own; the clear coat supplies both. Use a SprayMax 2K aerosol clear over the can.

Tires back on in 48–72 h

With SprayMax 2K aerosol clear, mount tires and refit the wheels after 48–72 hours at 64–77°F; cold can double it.

Free guides, on paper too

Free step-by-step aerosol and spray-gun guides as PDFs you can print, and you can add a free printed copy to your order.

Plan a set of four

Doing a set of four wheels? Painters report 2–3 cans of color and 2 cans of SprayMax 2K clear.

Ships UPS Ground

Free UPS Ground shipping on orders of $300 or more after discounts. Every order ships by ground because paint and aerosols are regulated as hazardous materials.

Straight answers

Asked in every garage.

Where do I find my wheel color?

Factory wheel colors often aren't on the door-jamb label, so the car's paint code may not name the wheel color. If you're unsure which color your wheels are, email info@truerim.com before you order.

How many cans do I need for a set of four?

Painters report 2–3 cans of color and 2 cans of SprayMax 2K clear for a set of four wheels.

Will it match my wheels?

Color match: we mix to your vehicle's factory paint code. Final appearance can vary with the age, wear and condition of the existing finish, so we recommend a test spray before full application.

Spray a test card first and compare it to the wheel in daylight. If the card doesn't match, email info@truerim.com before you paint.

Do I need a spray gun or compressor?

No. The 12 oz (340 g) aerosol is ready to spray, with no gun, compressor or mixing. Shake it for 60 seconds and spray medium coats from 6–8 in.

Do I need clear coat?

Yes. These are basecoats: they dry flat and need a clear coat for gloss and protection. Over the aerosol, use a SprayMax 2K aerosol clear: Glamour or High Speed for gloss, Satin or Matte for a lower sheen (Satin and Matte can't be polished).

Do I need primer?

Only on bare metal, body filler and sand-throughs; sound factory paint just needs sanding. Use TrueRim 1K primer: Grey under most colors, Black under dark colors with no red in them. The kit builder on each color's page picks the shade.

How long before I can mount tires?

With SprayMax 2K aerosol clear, wait 48–72 hours at 64–77°F before you mount tires and refit the wheels. Cold can double it.

Why ground shipping only?

Every order ships UPS Ground; air and express aren't available. Paint, aerosols, clear coats, reducers and solvents are regulated as hazardous materials, so the whole order ships by ground. UPS Ground usually takes 1–5 business days from Seekonk, MA, plus processing.

Free UPS Ground shipping on orders of $300 or more after discounts. See our shipping policy.

Can I return paint?

Paint can't be returned once it's opened or used. Clear coats, hardeners, reducers, primers and solvents can't be returned either.

Wrong, damaged or defective item: email info@truerim.com within 24 hours of delivery with photos of the item, the label and the box. Other unopened, unused items: email us within 10 days of delivery for approval and a label. See our refund policy.

Can I order more later to match?

Yes. Order this same color again; it's matched to the same factory color.

More questions? Email info@truerim.com.
