DetailsDescription

The general adhesion scuff — for every surface a sanding disc cannot sit flat on.

Sunmight Flexible Scuff Pads in Maroon (Very Fine). A thin, conformable non-woven pad built on aluminum oxide grain, made to fold into the shapes a block and paper cannot follow: spoke windows, the radius where a spoke meets the wheel face, the inside of a lip, and every edge and tight corner.

Those are exactly the places a refinish lifts from first, because they are the places that never got keyed.

Sand to change the shape. Scuff to change the grip.

If you are removing material, leveling damage or cutting a featheredge, that is sanding — use paper. If the surface is already the right shape and all it needs is a mechanical key for the next coat to hold on to, that is scuffing — use this pad.

Forcing paper on a block into a curve rounds the shape off and cuts straight through on the high edges. A pad bends to the surface instead and abrades only the peaks, so it keys without leveling.

When to reach for Maroon

  • Keying contours, spoke windows, edges and lips before primer, alongside your paper on the flat faces
  • Scuffing a sound existing finish you are painting over
  • General adhesion prep on aluminum, steel, plastics, fiberglass and previously painted surfaces

Working finer? Step up to the Sunmight 80600 Gray (Ultra Fine) for blend areas and for re-keying a coat that has gone past its recoat window. Maroon is the more aggressive of the two.

A scuff pad is not sandpaper of the same number. Maroon is commonly quoted as a 320–400 grit equivalent, but a pad conforms and abrades the peaks where paper cuts flat — so it keys a surface rather than leveling it. It does not replace the final sand grit your basecoat data sheet specifies on flat areas. Paper on the flats, pad on the contours.
